Every safety boot and shoe certified to EN ISO 20345 has a toecap tested against a 200 joule impact and a 15 kN compression load. S1 covers those basic requirements plus a closed heel, anti-static properties and energy absorption in the heel. S1P adds a penetration resistant insert in the sole, against sharp objects such as nails underfoot. Under the 2022 edition of EN ISO 20345 a final S (as in S1PS, S3S or S7S) means the penetration resistant insert is non-metallic and tested with a 3 mm nail. S1PS shoes are listed here too.

What does S1P mean?
S1P is S1 plus penetration resistance. Under EN ISO 20345 that means a 200 joule toecap, a closed heel, anti-static properties and energy absorption in the heel, with a penetration resistant insert in the sole.
What is S1PS?
S1PS is S1P marked under the 2022 edition of EN ISO 20345, with a non-metallic penetration resistant insert tested with a 3 mm nail.
Are S1P shoes water resistant?
S1P does not include the water resistance test for the upper. That test is added at S2 and S3.
Should I choose S1P or S3?
Both have a toecap and a penetration resistant midsole. S3 adds an upper that resists water penetration and absorption, and a cleated outsole. Your own risk assessment sets which you need.
