Every safety boot and shoe certified to EN ISO 20345 has a toecap tested against a 200 joule impact and a 15 kN compression load. S1 covers those basic requirements plus a closed heel, anti-static properties and energy absorption in the heel. S1 does not include a penetration resistant midsole or a water resistance test for the upper.

What does S1 mean on safety footwear?
S1 is a marking under EN ISO 20345: the basic requirements, including a toecap tested to 200 joules, plus a closed heel, anti-static properties and energy absorption in the heel.
Does S1 include a midsole?
No. S1 has no penetration resistant midsole. If there could be nails or sharp objects underfoot, look for a rating that includes one, such as S1P or S3.
What is the difference between S1 and S1P?
S1P is S1 plus a penetration resistant insert in the sole.
